2017 BBM Japanese B.League Basketball Fast Break 2nd Half

In a few weeks the 2nd Half of the 2017 B.League cards should be released.  BBM Cards Navi, BBM's Facebook page, has a few pictures of the 2nd half cards.  Like the 1st Half set, there will be 72 regular cards as well as an 18-card "On Fire" subset along with all the usual autographs.  The autograph checklist isn't released yet, but I'm assuming there will be 72 autograph cards in the 2nd Half as well(one for each player).  The 1st Half boxes have been sold out in some of the usual places I've looked so these seem to be a fairly popular product in Japan.

Here are the photos the BBM Cards Navi's website....

  1. 2nd Half boxes are now SOLD OUT across Japan. If I did my math right, they only made 1500 or so of these boxes.

    1. That's a pretty small print run. I think even the women's wrestling and bowling cards get 3000-box production runs.

    2. It seems small to me too. They might not have anticipated the popularity.

    3. BBM Cards Navi posted the results of some box breaks of the 2017 True Heart wrestling set on their page. Each box produced 6-7 autographs, and bumping that up against the checklist gives me a production run of about 1800 +/- 150 boxes. So much smaller than I thought.

That could be a reaction to the market, as I remember 2014 and 2015 selling out for the most part by the time the next year's cards released, but you can still find 2016 fairly readily.

    4. I had to go back and follow up on the 2016 print run. Based on the checklist for 2016, there were probably 2000-2100 boxes produced. So this year's True Heart product probably lost a couple hundred boxes (around 10%) from last year, but with an actual increase in the total number of autographs produced (11659 for 2017, 10580 for 2016). There are just more autographs per box, according to my back-of-the-envelope math. Either way, it appears to be much less than 3000 boxes.

I do know that there were 3000 boxes of the P-League bowling cards, though, because the boxed sets are serially-numbered. Those are a different product format, being boxed sets with two autographs rather than the random packaging of the basketball and wrestling cards.

    5. Oh wow, 1800 does seem pretty small too for this main release. I just put in a 3-box order so hopefully it won't sell out. I wonder if they are trying to manage supply and demand a little better.

  2. There's a team called the Seahorses? Awesome! If I ever start collecting basketball cards again... the Seahorses might be my new team.

    1. I know, there are some awesome names!! By the way, I'm gauging some interest in doing some regular box breaks of Japanese BBM cards (4-6 times a year) (maybe wrestling, baseball, multi-sport, bowling, etc...) with ~3-4 people where we each bust our own box and get scored based on what we get and blog about it. Total winner at end of year gets some sort of small prize from the other folks. Will blog about it and see if anyone is interested.
